Guidelines for Reporting Rarities and Submission of Annual Records
Detailed records of nationally or locally rare species (guidance on these is
here) should be sent to the County Recorder Eddie Hunter (
goweros23@gmail.com) as soon as possible after the sighting. An appropriate description should be provided of the species, your previous experience of it (and similar species), the circumstances and weather conditions in which the sighting occurred and any other pertinent information (such as photos). He will then circulate to the local or national records committee as relevant.
Day to day observations, including of nest sites, flocks of birds and species of local interest, should be collated in the Annual Record Form and sent to Eddie as an email attachment following each calendar year. Receiving these by the end of January is ideal as an early start can then be made on compiling the annual report.
PLEASE NOTE
Please could we ask that detailed locational information that may lead to the disturbance of the nest sites of species listed under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act (1981) is omitted from any posts. This may otherwise lead to an offence being committed.
Schedule 1 species that regularly breed in the recording area are Dartford warbler, chough, honey buzzard, crossbill, goshawk, kingfisher, hobby, red kite, barn owl, peregrine, little ringed plover and Cetti’s warbler.
Llanrhidian Marsh – Hen Harrier (ringtail) @ 5:30pm. Lost to view for a time; however, an individual was relocated climbing and drifting towards Cefn Bryn. Also a Merlin, 2 Kestrel and at least 2 Green Sandpiper.
Crofty/Dalton’s Point – 5 Spoonbill opposite slipway. Lots of small birds in the thicket – at least 6 Chiffchaff, Blackcap (F), 2+ Goldcrest.
At Pitton/Mewslade today – A juv Hobby, 10 Chiffchaff, 6 Goldcrest, 7 Swallow, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Chough. Yesterday 25 Crossbills over Middleton in the morning also with Siskins and 5 Redpoll going over.
At Sedgers Bank, Port Eynon today; 5 Pale-bellied Brent were feeding, 159 Mediterranean Gull, 58 Ringed Plover, 38 Sanderling, 2 Dunlin, 1 Turnstone, 2 Little Egret, 1 Heron, 1 Shag & 2 Chough.
Off Dalton’s Point, Penclawdd; Marsh Harrier and 4 Spoonbills.
Movement of redpolls and a few crossbills over Oxwich this morning. In the marsh small numbers of goldcrest (11) and chiffchaff (9), plus a few blackcap. A few redwing present at dawn, with 6 trapped and ringed.

Peregrine flying west between Rotherslade and Limeslade this morning. It had an encounter with a carrion crow with talons out twisting and turning in mid-air. The crow successfully defended itself and the peregrine carried on westward over Langland.
At Pitton the Siberian Chiffchaff was still present up the valley from the Pitton ( crossroads) about 300m (in the trees just past the caravan) around the sewage pumping station with 12 Gold crest, 3 chiffchaff and 5 Blackcaps around the lower part of road in gardens

At Mewslade today a nice arrival of Thrushes in valley included 2 Ring Ousels, 30 Song Thrush , 10 Redwing and 20 Blackbird. Also 12 Blackcap, 10 Goldcrest, 4 Redpoll – which dropped in Nitten Field, 5 Chiffchaff, 10 Siskin over. Also 3 Great Spotted woodpecker and 3 Coal tit. At Pitton Cross a vocal Siberian Chiffchaff appeared for 10 mins before vanishing (likely up the valley as this is where most warblers move from this point). My first Redwings of the season heard flying overhead in Swansea Marina last night. Seemed to be a fair few.
Lliw Valley-Generally quiet but a substantial movement of Redwing.Some dropping down to feed on berries just below the ruin of Bwllfa Isaf. Several flocks in excess of 300 birds each.Two Mute Swan on lower reservoir and a Kestrel and Sparrowhawk harassing Meadow Pipits.

07/10/23: Salthouse Point slipway, 3.30pm, female merlin pursuing linnets over the marsh then skimming the foreshore. 4 curlew, 12 shelduck, 400+ black tailed godwit.
Numerous Swallows feeding this morning in the fields between Bishopston and Caswell. Looked like they were then heading East, consistent with Jeremy’s earlier post.
This morning at 0800 a constant stream of migrating Swallows flying easterly at Mumbles Head and Bracelet Bay. Perhaps 40 a minute.

6 Canada Goose, 35 Shelduck, 4 Gadwall, 16 Wigeon, 11 Mallard, 155 Teal, 221 Pintail, 250 Oystercatcher, 1 Golden Plover, 31 Curlew, 19 Dunlin, 1 Curlew Sandpiper, 1 Snipe, 2 Common Sandpiper, 1 Green Sandpiper, 85 Redshank,
Oxwich Marsh: 2 grasshopper warblers, sedge warbler, 41 blackcap, 19 chiffchaff, water rail, 5 stonechat among 113 birds captured (101 ringed 12 recaptured)
Interesting a few gropper and sedge warblers still about, end of September. You might expect long gone. Shows the value of capturing and ringing.
