WWT Llanelli CES8 23/07/2015

with No Comments
There were perfect conditions this morning, albeit slightly cooler than previous mornings. With 49 birds, a lot being juveniles the day turned out to be one of the best we have experienced for a while, more like the days from years ago I am told when catch rates were better.
As the last CES7 we started off with a number of Wrens and Robins. As the earlier morning chill was replaced with a warmer feel we started to catch warblers. 10 Chiffchaff and 9 Blackcap being the highlights of the day. We caught small numbers of birds on a regular basis during the morning for a most enjoyable session. The 49 birds spread over 12 species can be seen in the chart below.
Towards the end of the session the two juvenile kingfishers were a complete surprise, caught side by side in net 4. Checking back in our records the last one to be caught was in net 3 on the 10th August 2008. Our trainee Dan processed one of them, this being her first.

We managed to get the two juvenile kingfishers on video and it clearly shows how they turn their heads and how far round in each direction they can go.
