Guidelines for Reporting Rarities and Submission of Annual Records
Detailed records of nationally or locally rare species (guidance on these is here) should be sent to the County Recorder Eddie Hunter (goweros23@gmail.com) as soon as possible after the sighting. An appropriate description should be provided of the species, your previous experience of it (and similar species), the circumstances and weather conditions in which the sighting occurred and any other pertinent information (such as photos). He will then circulate to the local or national records committee as relevant.

Day to day observations, including of nest sites, flocks of birds and species of local interest, should be collated in the Annual Record Form and sent to Eddie as an email attachment following each calendar year. Receiving these by the end of January is ideal as an early start can then be made on compiling the annual report.

PLEASE NOTE

Please could we ask that detailed locational information that may lead to the disturbance of the nest sites of species listed under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act (1981) is omitted from any posts. This may otherwise lead to an offence being committed.

Schedule 1 species that regularly breed in the recording area are Dartford warbler, chough, honey buzzard, crossbill, goshawk, kingfisher, hobby, red kite, barn owl, peregrine, little ringed plover and Cetti’s warbler.

Clydach/Glais circular walk. High water levels on canal and river which meant that only Moorhen(2) were brave enough. Otherwise-Goldcrest(1),Buzzard(4),Jay(2),Great-spotted Woodpecker(2),Mistle Thrush(4),Bullfinch(6) and a few “see-sawing” Graet Tit. On the return stretch there was a small bat ? pipistrelle feeding above the canal by Coed Gwilym.

Kittiwakes on Mumbles Pier Due to the interest this has generated (here and on Facebook), details of the Planning Conditions relating to the conversion of the old lifeboat house on Mumbles Pier to a cafe are below. The wording and detail of the conditions reflect representations made by GOS committee and individual members, the Welsh Ornithological Society and the Wildlife Trusts of South and West Wales, who were all concerned to see an appropriate condition attached to the scheme. It is good to see the planning process working to protect biodiversity. Condition 11. “Prior to any works in respect on… Read more »

Approx. 1200 black-headed gull on Ashleigh Road western field this morning. A good scattering of Meds, a few common gull and a lesser black-back among them, but flock constantly moving, making accurate counts difficult.
Also 25 curlew.
