Guidelines for Reporting Rarities and Submission of Annual Records
Detailed records of nationally or locally rare species (guidance on these is
here) should be sent to the County Recorder Eddie Hunter (
goweros23@gmail.com) as soon as possible after the sighting. An appropriate description should be provided of the species, your previous experience of it (and similar species), the circumstances and weather conditions in which the sighting occurred and any other pertinent information (such as photos). He will then circulate to the local or national records committee as relevant.
Day to day observations, including of nest sites, flocks of birds and species of local interest, should be collated in the Annual Record Form and sent to Eddie as an email attachment following each calendar year. Receiving these by the end of January is ideal as an early start can then be made on compiling the annual report.

Please could we ask that detailed locational information that may lead to the disturbance of the nest sites of species listed under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act (1981) is omitted from any posts. This may otherwise lead to an offence being committed.
Schedule 1 species that regularly breed in the recording area are Dartford warbler, chough, honey buzzard, crossbill, goshawk, kingfisher, hobby, red kite, barn owl, peregrine, little ringed plover and Cettiās warbler.
Quick check at Swansea Barrage while in Sainsbury’s.. no sign of the I Iceland gull but birds constantly flying in to the flock… So it might be out by the river mouth as it’s low tide..

Yes, black redstarts seen every few days. Not sure if it’s the same individual repeatedly or different ones. A long-distance record shot attached.

Llandarcy 4 pm 135 Canada geese flying north west 30 linnets, a kestrel and a Raven
Langland garden this morning. green woodpecker, wren, nuthatch, blue tit, coal tit, blackbird, magpie, dunnock, black-headed gull, herring gull, robin, jackdaw, crow and woodpigeon
In my (Bishopston) garden so far today, Grey Wagtail. 2 Long-tailed Tits, c6 Goldfinches, 2 Chaffinches plus Blue Tits, Great Tit, Dunnock and Starlings.
Yesterday on Fairwood common/golf course: c8 Common Gulls, 2 Redwings, 2 Stonechats, Raven and a Buzzard being mobbed by a single Crow.

A Redwing in a field at Pen-y-Gaer, Penclawdd this afternoon.
25+ oyster catchers and around 12 curlews on Ashleigh Rd western field. Two bramblings in the field at the end of Cwm Farm Ln (leading down to Ashleigh Rd) feeding on the ground. Song and mistle thrushes in Clyne Woods, near cycle track and lots of tits (blue and long tailed).

Gnoll pond this afternoon the male garganey is still there also 80 black headed gull 6 tufteds,usual mallards moorhens and coots
Female Hen Harrier quartering over the Vile this morning for about 10 minutes. Then disappeared over the cliffs to be replaced by about 50 Lapwings who settled down in one of the fields with a bunch of Starlings and Black Headed Gulls. Elsewhere small flocks of Linnets, Goldfinches and Chaffinches mainly on the sunflower fields. Male and female Kestrels nearby and a lot of Blackbirds and Song Thrushes
Clyne Common: 4 snipe flushed close to main bridle path from Willow Court towards golf course,1 female reed bunting, 2 green woodpeckers, 1 male stonechat, 2 linnet, four goldfinches, 5 fieldfares, 1 buzzard and a female kestrel. Jan 8th 2021

7 Jan just west of Snaple Point Langland: a chough on a concrete fence post alongside the path. It allowed me to approach almost within the permitted two metres. I wonder if they will slowly acclimatise themselves to people and become as approachable as jackdaws. Today 8 Jan: an even closer encounter with a goldcrest in Christine’s hedge. It was moving from yew to yew at knee height, seemingly oblivious of us.
Circular walk Clydach to Pontardawe. A great day for recording thrushes. On the Mond golf course Mistle Thrush(5),Song Thrush(6),Redwing(2) and Blackbird(14).Field next to horse stables at Trebannws held Song Thrush(12),Mistle Thrush(4),Blackbird(15) along with Meadow Pipit(5).Trebannws Water Treatment Works-Treecreeper(1),Bullfinch(2),Chaffinch(2) and Black headed Gull(25),Goosander(1 male on Tawe) and Dipper(1). On the homeward journey Little Egret(1) feeding in field next to horse paddock and a Kingfisher(female) fishing the small ditch that runs parallel to the canal.
