CES 4 took place on 2nd June and there were more juvenile birds than on earlier sessions. There were 3 recently fledged great tits with an attendant female and a young blue tit also with a female. In these circumstances we release the young and adult together in the area where they entered the net to make sure that the family group stays together while the young are dependent. The other juvenile birds were 3 dunnocks, 2 robins and 4 long tailed tits. Dan was able to ring 2 nestling great tits in a nearby box. The advantage of ringing birds in the nest is that they are of a known age if re-captured which is valuable for survival studies.

The number of bullfinches has increased this year and including today’s pair we have had 5 pairs.
